Much has been written in both management literature and in neuroscience journals about the plasticity of the brain. Our brain, as complicated as it is, can be viewed as a very straight-forward and programmable machine.

Every human being has the same brain structure that causes the brain to react to outside stimuli in the same way. For example, when confronted with a threat to your life, the brain automatically initiates a fight or flight mode. That is the raw emotion. The “felt emotion” is fear. Similarly, every stimulus is associated with a felt emotion of some kind.

Our challenge as leaders is to understand how our behaviours impact those who work for us, our colleagues, and our bosses.

Each of our interactions with them is part of that same chain – an emotion being caused to source in the limbic part of the brain and then to cascade into a felt emotion that either engages the cognitive brain or simply bypasses it, thereby kicking us in to survival mode.

We want to foster positive emotions and engagement in the workplace, not stress and fear.

To that end, I have developed a list of 10 behaviours/actions that all leaders who aspire to build trust and engagement with their employees should use every week.
