The Top 3 Ways to Improve Employee Engagement [Video]

In this video, I discuss the top three ways to raise employee engagement levels in your organization. Through my data, three variables have consistently ranked the lowest on employee engagement scores.

1. Recognition

You must give credit where credit is due. When your employees do a job well, it is important that they receive recognition.

Evidence shows that every employee must feel appreciated at work. When they do not, it has a negative impact on engagement and on their work.

As a leader, you must accept and act on this need. You must also ensure all of the leaders within your organization are aware of this. Make a habit of consistently recognizing good work – the gold standard is once per week.

2. Regular Performance Reviews

Typically, performance reviews are conducted only once per year. Yet, how can employees course-correct throughout the year if they rarely receive feedback about how they are doing?

If employees don’t receive regular feedback, they will not know how they are performing or what they should be aiming for. They are more likely to fail.

You must make a commitment to conducting performance reviews more often, and ensuring that your employees are receiving the feedback they need.

3. Being Consulted on Decisions

Employees should be involved in decisions that impact their job or department.

Some leaders make all of the decisions, and expect the employees to simply execute. When this happens it impacts the work environment. Employees get the message that their manager does not trust them, does not think they have the skills or knowledge to solve the problem, and does not respect their opinions.

Naturally, employees who are given this message will disengage from the work at hand. They will not feel as though they own the challenges that face them.

The Bottom Line

A great boss spends 67% of their time coaching and teaching employees.

Improving in just these three areas – all of which involve coaching and teaching employees – will help you build a high performance culture within your company.
