Review of “Return on Character: The Real Reason Leaders and Their Companies Win”

This book is a must-read for leaders and aspiring CEOs. Not only does author Fred Kiel prove conclusively with data and analysis that there is a return on character, he gives us hope that we can help aspiring CEOs build their own character. 

Perhaps the most fascinating part of his analysis is that CEOs who were rated very high by their employees always rated themselves lower, while CEOs who rated themselves just 1 point below the top CEOs in the survey were rated significantly lower by their employees (in fact 25% lower!).

This should resonate with many of you who perform year end performance reviews. In my experience, the employees who rated themselves highly in their self-assessments were almost always those with whom I had issues on performance. With my top performers, the opposite was always true; they always rated themselves lower than I was rating them. They were self-aware, critical, and demanding of themselves.

CEOs who have organizations that are challenged in engagement are almost always blissfully unaware that this is going on … and often, they are one of the main people causing the issue!
