On Boarding: Critical to Make Our Hires Feel Welcome


As part of my role in improving organizations’ employee engagement, I do a tenure analysis. And I have found that retention in the first two years is an issue for most of my clients.

For this reason, I encourage my readers to read this article from DecisionWise, “First Day Employee Engagement Killers”. This article is a great read and worth taking the time to remind ourselves what it is like when we first join a company.

“We know that an employee’s first impression is important, if not critical, in nurturing their relationship with the company. So my pitch is that we need to decouple the compliance aspect of the onboarding process from the employee’s first day. That way, new employees will have the freedom to focus on the human stuff – the stuff that really fosters engagement.”

In my work, I have started asking the senior team if they can remember the first time they ever changed jobs or their first job. Often in the first 2 or 3 weeks, a new hire (when they left another job) will look around and ask themselves “what have I done?”

This is normal; they are adjusting to a whole new culture and a need to get comfortable with “how things get done here”. 

I think it is critical for us to not forget those experiences when we start a new employee, and think about how to make it a great experience.

On boarding can set the tone for a new employee’s entire experience with your company. As hard as they’re working to make a good first impression on you, are you certain you’re making a good first impression on them?
