Negative Emotions Impact Employee Performance

In my work with clients, I focus a lot on the productivity-sapping impact of negative emotions in the workplace.

Employee engagement is all about winning the hearts and minds of employees. Simple careless acts by leaders impact employee performance; as do poorly thought-out policies and procedures.

For example, in the world of performance management: who thinks that force-ranking of people on a bell curve sends the right message to employees, managers, and supervisors? In reality, it all too often frustrates the manager and deflates the employee.

“Why Compassion Is a Better Managerial Tactic than Toughness”, an article in the Harvard Business Review, gives us a quick snapshot into one particular instance in a workplace where the reaction to an issue was anger, and how it impacted the person who bore the brunt of the attack.

“Not only does an angry response erode loyalty and trust, it also inhibits creativity by jacking up the employee’s stress levels.”

While we can’t avoid this all of the time, we do need to focus changing this behaviour if we want to improve our own leadership skills and get the most out of employees.
