Merry Christmas! Why Giving Might Build Your Team

Yes, it is that time of year, and we all need to step back from our busy lives and ask some real tough questions about what we have done this year to make the world, our company, our town, a better place?

More and more companies and employees are taking their energy and creativity into the communities they live in and giving back. As with all initiatives like this, the experts will ask the fundamental question: what is in it for the company?

Major organizations like banks, insurance companies, and other well-known national brands all want to know that the exposure they will get from a charity will be good for their brand – good for the brand from a consumer perspective and good for the employment brand.

Merry ChristmasHowever, we know from extensive work in the world of psychology that the sense of gratitude that comes from helping others is a powerful emotion. Indeed, people who take the time daily to express gratitude for their lives are the happiest people.

More money? Doesn’t work. Big promotion? Temporary joy. No, gratitude tops the list of ways to truly be happy.

So, my solution at this time of year is to turn your time and energy to a charitable endeavour. Don’t worry about the branding benefits! Just know that when you do this, you help each employee see that they can get true happiness from these types of team building exercises. They can become a metaphor for how they want to build relationships internally and with their clients.

So, my wish for the holidays is that you find a way to get your team involved. Remember: people don’t care how much you know until they know you care!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your team!
