Keeping Your Company Culture in the Face of Growth

WestJet-employee-engagement

In the work I do with companies measuring employee engagement, I am always struck by the challenge of building and keeping company culture intact while growing. Whether your business is experiencing organic growth or growth through mergers and acquisitions, maintaining a positive company culture is critical.

A recent article from Virgin is a great bit of proof that many businesses share this challenge. Titled “Five tips for keeping culture intact as your company grows”, it offers good tips for dealing with this challenge:

  1. Care about your employees: How will you develop them and help them be their best?
  2. Focus on your infrastructure: How will your employees communicate and share knowledge as the company expands?
  3. Support your managers: How will you empower your leadership team?
  4. Emulate company cultures you admire: How will you create a workplace environment that’s positive and enjoyable?
  5. Walk the talk: How will you model the culture you want to cultivate in your organization?

Measure Employee Engagement to Assess Culture

As your company grows and you strive to build a great workplace culture, attaining tangible data is the best way to gauge the success of your efforts and pinpoint areas for improvement.

I am a firm believer that you need to do your employee engagement survey to get the real depth and specifics of your organization. A survey following a period of growth or a merger will provide quantitative and qualitative evidence of the extent to which this culture change has affected your company.

Recent surveys I’ve conducted for companies where mergers were at play have reinforced the importance of looking at both the survey numbers and the open-ended questions. Sometimes the “we/they” dynamic of a merger only becomes apparent in the open-ended questions.

Through understanding the results of the survey, you will be able to take deliberate and targeted action to fix any issues and create a healthy company culture.
