Employee Engagement Survey Results Should Be Quick

Would you go to the doctor and not expect to hear back from him/her in the next few days about test results? 

I often meet prospects who are using large organizations to do their employee engagement surveys and they are waiting months for the results. Why is this happening in the world of today’s technologies? A delay of 4-6 months to get data is in very real danger of being out of date; and perhaps more importantly, when we present the results to the employees they have little recall of the survey itself!

Remember, the real goal of an engagement survey is to find out where your company stands today with your current employees. Only with this timely data can organizations take effective corrective action.

After several months, it’s not time to get the survey results – it’s time to do the survey again to see if you are making progress on your action items!

Employee Engagement Surveys Should Not Be Benchmarked Against Other Companies

Another problem with some of the available employee engagement surveys is relevancy. They benchmark your results based on other companies; but are comparisons to other companies valuable, or even valid? 

Every company has unique characteristics (industry, internal culture, strategic alliances, and so on) that impact the perspective of employees. Making comparisons across industries, or even companies, is difficult and does not give actionable data.

The only thing a company should measure its employee engagement survey against is its own previous employee engagement survey.

The Purpose of Employee Engagement Surveys

Measuring engagement allows us to take precise actions based upon the diagnostics from the survey. We also want to engage in best practices and involve our employees in thinking about the results and the needed corrective actions that will enable the company to improve.

Involvement of employees in a timely fashion, to tackle issues unique to your specific company, is a part of increasing engagement and ultimately achieving the benefits that come with engaged employees.

Surveys that are outdated or benchmarked against irrelevant data will only hinder your company’s progress.
