Is There a Right or Wrong Time to Measure Employee Engagement?

WestJet-employee-engagement

In the years I have been doing employee engagement surveys, I have heard a lot of interesting reasons for why “now” isn’t the time to measure.

Here is a sample of some common excuses:

  • Just made some major changes in the leadership and won’t likely get a very good score.
  • Just did a reorganization and the employees are likely not that happy.
  • Just merged with another company and the employees are very concerned about the future.
  • Just came off a bad year, so there is likely a lot of anxiety in the troops.

The sad reality is that each one of these situations (and many more) is exactly the reason why you should do an employee engagement survey. It isn’t about the results, folks! You’re not trying to “get a high score”.

It’s about the process. It is about giving a voice to the employees. And there is no better time to do it than when things are tough around you. In fact, it is during these critical times that an employee engagement survey can help you the most!

Is-There-a-Right-or-Wrong-Time-to-Measure-Employee-EngagementEmployees need to be able to talk to the management and amongst themselves. They want to feel that their voices and ideas are being heard.

If your business is undergoing change or you think your employees may be unhappy, that’s exactly why you need to do the survey. Find out what their concerns are. Find out their ideas for addressing those concerns.

That’s how you build a positive, high performance culture.
