If Your Employees Don’t ‘Fit’ with Your Workplace Culture, Forget Engagement

Hiring for fit may be the most critical business need today. A bold statement, perhaps – but think about how essential your employees are to every single thing your business does.

Employees create customer loyalty. Employees put in discretionary effort (or not) to boost your productivity and profitability. Employees drive new initiatives. Employees create safe workplaces. The list goes on…

Unfortunately, we are too random about the interview process. The C.V., the resume; they are collections of half-truths. We train people to write them to appeal to the job being applied for.

A recent article on LinkedIn by Sallie Krawcheck, “A Simple Way to Get a Handle on a Company’s Culture”, talks about how absolutely necessary an employee’s ‘fit’ is with the company culture – and that how a company treats its people matters.

Workplace CultureSallie explains how, from her experience, you can determine a company’s true culture not from their value statement, but rather from: “how senior people at the company treat individuals who leave / are asked to leave, how they show them the door, and how they talk about them when they are gone.”

I think we are close to a revolution in business where culture and fit become a much more critical element. If you don’t fit, you won’t engage. Engagement is the next frontier and we won’t get there with the same old thinking.

Sports teams are a great example of this idea in action. Consider The Spurs, who just won the NBA championship in 5 games over a stacked team from Miami.

Their secret? They only look for a fit with the Spurs culture. A culture of: team, determined effort, defense first, and no one person greater than the whole. The phrase they use in looking at players is, “but is he a Spur?”

Talk about nailing the issue of fit!

You can figure out whether your employees are engaged – and build a supportive, high performance workplace culture – by consistently measuring employee engagement with an employee engagement survey. You’ll be able to use the tangible data to make real, concrete improvements across your organization.
