Human Capital Needs: Leadership and Culture Top the List!


Deloitte’s recent study, Human Capital Trends 2015: Canadian perspectives on the new world of work, points out the top ten issues facing the people responsible to the company for providing adequate Human Capital.

The top three items for Canadians are:

  1. Leadership (#2 issue globally)
  2. Culture and Engagement (#1 issue globally)
  3. Learning and Development (#3 issue globally)


The report focuses on “trends that [Deloitte] believe[s] Canadian organizations must address to position themselves to succeed in the years to come. … Leadership and its close companion, culture and engagement, shape and influence each other and define the organization’s values, priorities and ways of working. This, in turn, plays a key part in attracting, engaging and retaining talent.”

What I find stunning isn’t that these are the top three issues cited by HR leaders, but rather that these issues have been evident for many years. Equally stunning is how little progress I see in companies to address these issues.

Until CEOs take the issue of Human Capital seriously and place HR on the strategic team, they are only playing lip service to the challenge. Many companies tell us that their people are their most important asset. This makes a wonderful advertising tag line. It makes for an interesting discussion with investors, but it rarely finds itself in the tank with other business issues when the time comes for setting spending priorities in the business.

First to go, in most companies, is the training budget. First to go when the numbers aren’t being met is bonuses.

It’s time to get it right. North America is in a Human Capital crisis! Jobs go without proper candidates. Great candidates go without employment. Companies poach competitors’ leaders as a way to fulfill their leadership needs rather than investing in growing their own.

The hens have come home to roost.
