How to Retain Your Gen X Employees (And All Your Top Employees!)

Do you want to retain your top performers?

Of course you do! Retaining your best employees is how you will outperform your competitors and create a high performance workplace culture.

The Harvard Business Review recently wrote a good article about how to retain Gen X employees: “4 Ways to Retain Gen Xers”.

The article warns that employers may be at risk of losing some of their most valuable talent, the Gen Xers who are at the prime of their careers but have been stopped from progressing due to the volume of Baby Boomers still in the workforce.

According to a 2011 survey by the Center for Talent Innovation, 37% of Gen Xers have “one foot out the door” and are looking to leave their current job within three years.

Retain employeesHere are the four options the article proposes for retaining your Gen X employees:

  1. Give them independence and the chance to be in charge.
  2. Show them the path to advancing their careers.
  3. Encourage their entrepreneurial instincts.
  4. Offer them flexibility and a better work-life balance.

Don’t Forget the Other Cohorts!

While it’s certainly important to consider how you will retain your best Gen X employees – smart employers should be thinking about how they will retain their best employees in all age categories!

Employers are susceptible to loss in all demographics, not just Gen Xers. I don’t want to downplay the Gen X issue, but I think employers must implement a strategy of engaging all age cohorts and doing all they can to retain top talent.

So, want to keep your top people from all cohorts?

Give opportunities to all of your best employees – Millennials and Gen Xers. Create meaning in their work for your company and help them see the path to their future successes.

Great leadership is the key to engaging your talented employees. Engage them. Consult with them. Give them a voice. Be consistent. Be fair. Don’t put the spotlight on yourself, put it on them. Be humble. Be caring. Build them up.

As a leader, remember: it isn’t about you! It is about them. They will make you a hero if you just find ways to fire them up and turn them loose.
