Gary Hamel’s Talk on Reinventing Management for the 21st Century [Video]

Workplace EngagementGary Hamel is an influential leader in business management and the founder of the management consulting firm Strategos. He has published many books on leadership and management topics, including his most recent book in 2011, What Matters Now: How to Win in a World of Relentless Change, Ferocious Competition, and Unstoppable Innovation.

I recommend watching this video, “Reinventing the Technology of Human Accomplishment”, wherein Hamel discusses how to make organizations that are not only fit for the future, but fit for human beings.

Hamel argues that we must reinvent management because our management tools, principles, and methods were invented before 1920 … and we have outgrown them.

Organizations are now facing unprecedented challenges that old management simply cannot address:

  1. Accelerated Rate of Change
  2. Hyper Competition
  3. Knowledge As a Commodity (Ask yourself: How fast am I creating new knowledge?)

“I believe the companies that thrive over the next decade and beyond are going to be the companies that … evolve their management models faster than their competitors in ways that make them more adaptable, more innovative, and more engaging place to work.”

How can your company be more flexible, more innovative, and more engaging?

Whether you’re a small or big company, I believe there is one essential way to do this. You need to follow the same principles of leadership that are known to engage employees.

Research shows that engaged employees are more productive, creative, driven, and adaptable. If you aren’t doing the right things to create a highly engaged culture in your organization, you’re missing out on a huge opportunity and you’re giving your competitors a huge advantage.

To be sure, I would further suggest that you measure employee engagement so that you can identify either pockets of resistance or systemic issues that need to be resolved. Measuring will ensure you won’t waste valuable resources and time focusing in the wrong places.

In a changing knowledge economy saturated with competition, you can’t afford to manage your people in the old ways. You must engage them so they will bring their discretionary effort to work each and every day.

So please, check out the video below and let me know your thoughts on the topic.
