Everyone Hates Employee Performance Reviews – So Why Are You Still Doing Them?

WestJet-employee-engagement

Almost all employee engagement surveys I’ve done uncover a lack of effective communication between leaders/managers and their direct reports.

Why is this? I believe too many organizations are still locked in to the annual review that sets out a rating system for all employees. These old systems, often using five point ratings, are universally disliked and are only done because managers need to comply with HR Policy.

5 Ways to Make Employee Performance Reviews Better for Everybody” is an article from Questback. Like my previous blogs on the topic, it says that we need to shift the mindset and move to using regular conversations with our direct reports to manage for performance. The frequency with which you do that depends on a number of variables: timeliness of the feedback (a call center team needs a different frequency than an IT development project), the past levels of performance of the employee in question, the urgency and importance of the task being discussed, and so on.

This article is a good read. It’s time for leaders to begin thinking about managing for performance instead of conducting “performance reviews” to comply with HR.

Employee engagementManaging for performance is about getting the most out of people and treating them with respect. Not grading them like meat through the USDA grading process!
