Engaging Millennial Employees

I had the pleasure of attending the PWC (Price Waterhouse Coopers) presentation on “Bridging the Generation Gap”. What was fascinating was that millennials comprise 65% of the workforce at PWC and are forecasted to be as high as 80% in 2 years!

Engaging Millennials

It is clear is that millennials have different priorities than the rest of the workforce. While this isn’t showing up in the overall engagement scores (so far, I have yet to find data in our global database that would indicate significantly different scores by age cohort), it is saying to us that we need to look at the individual items in the employee engagement surveys to find out what matters most to millennials and how they are scoring those items.

Millennials are more interested in:

  1. Being part of a team
  2. Job flexibility (work-life balance)
  3. Regular feedback on how they are doing
  4. Constant learning and improving
  5. Challenging work

Does this mean that salaries don’t matter? No. However, perhaps more so than any other generation, they want to feel that their compensation is fair. Fair based on what the same job pays outside the company and fair based on what others inside the company are being paid.

Attracting and retaining millennials is a big factor now in corporate sustainability and is going to grow to be the dominant issue in a very short time, as the Boomers retire and the GenX group begins to wind down their careers. Millennials are a well-educated and technology-savvy generation. To attract and keep them, we will need to be ready to think differently. No longer can we think “one size fits all” in our corporate policies around people.

I think it all begins with measuring and doing some very sophisticated cross-tabulations, so you can get a grip on the needs of your employees. A focus on employee engagement is becoming more critical for all companies.
