Engage Employees by Developing Excellent Leaders

In my last blog, I discussed the trend I am seeing of some companies using employee engagement scores in incentive programs. It’s a worrying trend because engaging employees isn’t about expensive incentive programs, costly training, and or anything like that.

Much of what needs to be done is about the company’s leaders – how we expect them to lead, how we select them to be the type of leader we want in our company, how they listen to and respect our employees, how they build our company’s reputation, and so on.Employee-Engagement

Many companies believe that having employees proud to work for the company is a key to employee engagement. I am beginning to see more and more evidence that being a good company (social and environmental responsibility) is more likely to be the price to be in the employee engagement game at all.

Employees want to be developed. They want to work for companies that recognize that balancing work and life is important. They want leaders who are good at growing the business, who are interested in the well-being of their team, who are trustworthy and inspire confidence, and finally, who “walk the walk”.

How leaders act and lead sends a clear message to the employees about the culture of the company. If you want to guard your culture, you need to measure engagement in each work team and fix any problems you identify – focusing on the most critical ones first.

Fail to take action and you will end up regretting your inaction.
