Engage Employees and Create a Corporate Culture Like WestJet

The more we learn about WestJet, the more I am convinced that the principles they live by are just good business for everyone!

I’ve discussed WestJet and their highly effective workplace culture in this blog previously, pointing out how they value their employees’ input and the impact that has on the business. (Read it here: Why Is It So Important to Seek Employee Input?)

In a recent article by PROFIT Guide, you can read an interview with Gregg Saretsky, CEO of WestJet. He discusses WestJet’s highly engaging culture, commenting:

“When you start with the understanding that WestJet’s culture is all about care and empowerment and engagement, then leading in this culture requires that you embrace those things, that you adopt a collaborative style, that you involve your people very early on in decisions that affect them.”

WestJet-employee-engagementGoing further, he talks about how employees are more motivated when they understand the “why” behind decisions – and not only that, but how leaders must listen to their feedback and value it.

Your employees may have solutions that you won’t even think of, or they’ll be able to point out potential challenges before they become huge roadblocks. They are immersed in the different aspects of your business day-in and day-out, which means they can provide a truly valuable perspective.

It makes good business sense to listen to them.

And, as Saretsky suggests, when employees are involved in decision-making they are more driven to implement those plans to the best of their abilities.

If this type of employee consultation can work in a very large company like WestJet, it can work for your company.
