Effective Leadership Traits – How Do Your Leaders Measure Up?

I discuss leadership a lot on this blog – and for good reason. Great leaders are what engage employees, which in turn lead to higher profits, increased customer loyalty, and improved employee retention (among many other benefits)!

Bad leaders – leaders who employees don’t trust –  create fear and anxiety in the workplace. I’ve previously examined seven leadership traits of poor, untrustworthy leaders. But what about traits of great, engaging leaders?

Traits of Effective Leaders

  1. Take Risks: Find opportunities and go for them. Encourage your employees to do the same, and support them even when their risks don’t pay off.
  2. Create Meaning: Employees need to feel their jobs have purpose and meaning. Share your vision with your employees, and let them know how their individual efforts are helping you all get there.
  3. Enable Others: Support your employees, their ideas, and their personal development. Encourage collaboration and discourage self-centered behaviour (such as taking credit for others’ ideas, etc.). Believe in the ability of your team to accomplish anything.
  4. Respect: Be honest with employees and respect their ideas and opinions. Put aside your pride and consult with them on important decisions.
  5. Walk the Walk: If you are unethical, don’t trust your employees, or act self-servingly, it won’t matter how many speeches you make about loyalty, trust, and dedication! Employees will follow from your example. You set the tone.
  6. Be Positive: Like I said above, you set the tone. Negativity creates an atmosphere of anxiety. Seek to emphasize the good things and celebrate everyone’s victories.
  7. Communicate: Communicate goals and plans. Give feedback not only when an employee needs discipline or course-correction, but when they are doing good work!

As a business owner, you not only need to cultivate these traits in yourself, but you need to know the extent to which each of your leaders exhibits them.

Concrete data will show you which teams or groups perform the best, and how the leaders of those groups behave. Then, you’ll know exactly where to focus your efforts to make measureable improvements over time.
