Are You Trying to Pre-package Employee Engagement? Stop!


What employee engagement “programs” have you initiated at your workplace? Be careful, because they might be the wrong ones!

Remember, taking the time to recognize great efforts is a full time job. There are no shortcuts. It needs to be part of every leader and manager’s thinking, every week.

Your employees will not view an out-of-the-box solution as a true form of recognition.

Here are the top 3 bad ideas they discuss:

  1. Employee of the Month

The problem: it is not individualized and it honours one employee at the expense of the others.

  1. Cheap Rewards (like Free Pizza)

The problem: once again, it is not individualized. Furthermore, it is a paltry reward for good work and does not make people want to do their best.

  1. Monetary Reward Programs with Caps

Employee-engagementThe problem: the article states that caps limit motivation. However, I disagree on a more fundamental level. I challenge the premise that financial bonus programs foster engagement at all. Research shows financial rewards are not necessary to engage employees. It might be a nice extra, but it’s not what will encourage employees to bring their discretionary effort every day. With or without caps.

All three of these ideas are out-of-the-box employee engagement programs. And they don’t work. Not if you really want to engage your employees!

The bottom line is simple; you can’t automate and pre-package employee engagement.

Ask yourself – do you take time to connect with your employees? To recognize performance?

You need to tailor your feedback and recognition of employees to each individual employee. That’s the way to get real results. Real, engaging leadership that makes people care. No shortcuts.
