Amazon: Too Bad We Don’t Know the Whole Story!

“Nearly every person I worked with, I saw cry at their desk.”

Amazon is fighting a trench war in the media over of workplace bullying, lack of empathy, and an overly performance-driven culture.

“At Amazon, workers are encouraged to tear apart one another’s ideas in meetings, toil long and late (emails arrive past midnight, followed by text messages asking why they were not answered), and held to standards that the company boasts are “unreasonably high.”

Employee engagementJeff Bezos, Amazon’s CEO, has responded to the accusations of poor work conditions with,

The fact that the CEO has had to join in the dialogue, and that they don’t appear to have the data to support his views, is the key issue I see here.

If Bezos took employee engagement seriously and had the data on his organization, he would recognize it! As I’ve discussed at length, the further away from the front line you are, the more the information you get is screened/filtered by those who tell you what they want you to know.

Employee engagement survey data would show the real pulse of the employees. An employee engagement survey would help the CEO seek out and help those leaders whose employees are feeling that they aren’t valued. Those who cry at their desks.

The engagement survey is a key tool to be proactive and find out the true voice of the employees. It is essential for building a leadership culture that won’t present the CEO with this type of PR nightmare.

The unfortunate possibility is that these are just the disgruntled or actively disengaged employees who are talking. ALL companies have them! The question is: have we given them a voice, have we helped them to adapt to our culture, have we helped them find a less stressful role?

The most unfortunate part of this is that the brand can be impacted, and as importantly, the share price.

Think employee engagement is a “nice to have”?  I wonder if Mr. Bezos would say that now.
