6 Reasons Using a DIY Service for an Employee Engagement Survey Is a Terrible Idea

WestJet-employee-engagement

This is a question I get often:why can’t I just do my survey on Survey Monkey and save money?”

Survey Monkey, or any other do-it-yourself survey service, might seem like a good idea at first. But based on my years of experience designing and administering employee engagement surveys, I can tell you with conviction that it is not a good idea.

And here’s why:

  1. One important part of any good survey is the ability to get results by location, by manager, by job type, by tenure, by age cohort, etc. How will you build that on Survey Monkey and manipulate the data? It will mean that you need to capture all that data and then manipulate on a spreadsheet. How much time and effort will that take?

  1. The ability to capture the data mentioned above, then to provide year over year comparisons, is a big part of doing employee engagement surveys. How will you take data and move it in the case of a restructuring or in closing a location?

  1. Employee EngagementBuilding action plans after the exercise is the most critical step. I always recommend doing a plan for the company, one for each work group, and a plan of individual goals for each leader to improve their leadership skills. Will you know, based on your Survey Monkey results, how to build an effective action plan that focuses on the right things?

  1. Leadership is key: 76% of employees leave a company because of the relationship with their boss. How will you build the survey to accurately track how leaders are doing?

  1. Are you asking the right questions? You must craft the survey properly. That means not only asking the right questions, but avoiding survey “order of question” bias and wording bias. Of course, you must also avoid having double-barreled questions. Do you have survey best practice expertise in house?

  1. When your company sends out the email, your employees will know it is a Survey Monkey application. What is the likelihood that the employees will trust the confidentiality? I have replaced many “homemade” surveys in my time consulting, and the results were always skewed in the homemade version because the employees didn’t trust the company to not search for those who were negative in their responses.

If you try to do the survey yourself and do it incorrectly, you’ll waste time, money, and effort on useless data. Not to mention you could lose the trust of your employees forever.

That’s why you need an employee engagement survey expert on your side, whose extensive experience in the field will get you the data you require to get the business results you need.
