5 Keys to Engaging Leadership [Video]

Some of the most highly searched topics about effective leadership are: How do I motivate employees? How do I retain better employees? What are the best forms of recognition? How can I put in place a sustainable form of performance management?

Each of these can be addressed by leading like a coach. Being an engaging leader means doing these five things:

  1. Understand what motivates you as a leader. Good coaches are willing to share in decision-making. They encourage their employees to have their own opinions, and they respect those opinions.
  2. Establish trust. This begins with you trusting your employees. With trust, employees will be open and honest at their regular performance reviews.
  3. Work with each employee to set clear goals. Employees need to own their goals or they won’t be invested in accomplishing them.
  4. Hold regular formal feedback sessions. Certain types of employees may need more sessions than others. For example, someone in a sales position may benefit from a weekly session, whereas someone in product management may get what they need from a monthly one. Regardless of position, however, I recommend that you do not go below one feedback session per month.
  5. Provide informal feedback. Look for opportunities to provide feedback outside of the formal sessions. This fulfills your employees’ need for recognition. These opportunities can be found every single day.
